Crafted entirely out of recycled billboards, this first-year fashion design student transforms yesterday's advertising into a 3D comment on the lifecycle of materials and messages.
The split silhouette design echoes and honours the original purpose of the materials. The front of the design represents the bold, loud, outward-facing advertising messages, all vying for the public’s attention, often competing with each other. As the model walks down the runway, that is what is seen and consumed – a really big show. But it is fleeting. The model turns and in an instant, yesterday’s message is over. The back of the silhouette is black - the “billboard” has come down. By putting a human into the centre of this dichotomy, we feel the tension between the two worlds, and the simultaneous pull of both chaos and calm, loudness and quiet.
